Everything
has a season, and a time for every
matter
under the heavens.
…
What gain
is there for him who does in what he toils?
(Qohelet 3:1, 9)
Whenever
Jesus spoke about the kingdom of the heavens, he did so in the earthy toil of
farmers and merchants, shepherds and fishermen, women baking bread. In every
matter conducted under the heavens, human toil from generation to generation,
there is the potential to be caught-up into that kingdom, for heaven and earth
to be tightly knit together. It starts with the imagination, and finds
expression in justice and mercy and in living each moment to the full. In light
of heaven.
And
in this, there is unimaginable gain.
