Advent day 6 (2020)

People of God: awake!

The day is coming soon

when you shall see God face to face.

Remember the ways and the works of God.

God calls you out of darkness

to walk in the light of his coming.

You are God’s children.

Lord, make us one as we walk with Christ

today and for ever.

Amen.

The day is coming soon when…

One of the phrases of 2020 has been ‘the new normal’. But there is nothing normal (absolutely necessary, but not normal) about wearing masks and keeping 2 metres apart: these are, more honestly, our new abnormal. Now, as we come to the end of the year, there are grounds for hope that a vaccination programme will allow us to move into a new normal by this time next year. A new normal, not a return to the old one.

‘Advent’ literally means a season of getting ready, of preparing our lives for the new day coming. What is the new day, the new normal, you are hoping for? That dream might be of a fresh start, a new job, or a new love; or of ensuring that as a society we engage better with the pandemic of isolation. What is the new day you hope for, and what could you be doing right now to prepare for its arrival?
