breathe

Pottering about in the bedroom, putting clothes away, the swish and sigh of the traffic moving past comes to me through the windows, thrown open to let the room breathe.

The slow exhale of people on their way to work, at the start of another day. Whhhhhhhhhh...

At best, the daily commute is breathing-space, a buffer zone. At worst, part of the daily churn and grind.

I don’t know anyone who isn’t tired. Who isn’t carrying too much, and who hasn’t been doing so for too long. The insatiable demands put upon us to be productive.

The Bible-shorthand for that rapacious hunger to consume our soul is ‘Pharaoh’.

Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all who are weary and weighed down with heavy burdens, and I will lead you into rest.’

Breathe in, deeply.
Receive.

Breathe out, slowly.
Release.
