Mothers Of The Revolution

Here is a list of women of relationship-and-responsibility faith, to complement my earlier list of men:

Sarah is invited to laugh with God, and challenged with the responsibility of receiving her son back from the dead.

Rahab is invited to harbour God’s promise, and challenged with the responsibility of outliving the end of her world.

Deborah is invited to sit with God, and challenged with the responsibility of settling disputes among her tribe.

Naomi is invited to share in God’s pain, and challenged with the responsibility of cradling the coming kingdom.

Ruth is invited to leave her people’s gods, and challenged with the responsibility of restoring the fortunes of God’s people.

Hannah is invited to be open before God, and challenged with the responsibility of giving back to God the first-fruits of what he had given her, that she might receive more still.

Bathsheba is invited to know the restoration of God’s forgiveness, and challenged with the responsibility of illustrating his plan for the redemption of the world.

Esther is invited to share God’s beauty, and challenged with the responsibility of Such a Time as This.

Mary is invited to carry God within her, and challenged with the responsibility of helping him to die well.

Mary Magdalene is invited to experience God’s peace, and challenged with the responsibility of telling the world that Jesus had been raised from death to life.

Lydia is invited to conversation with God, and challenged with the responsibility of giving birth to the first church in Europe.

Priscilla is invited to share God’s rejection, and challenged with the responsibility of extending God’s whole hospitality.
